Balance of Power
We live in a world that relies heavily on fossil fuels. These traditional energy sources (i.e., oil, coal, and natural gas) still meet the majority of global energy demands. In fact, in 2005, fossil fuels still accounted for 81% of the world’s total primary energy supply.
However, rising energy prices, the finite nature of fossil fuels, energy security concerns and global warming have driven the global community to consider Alternative Energy sources.
The technology for generating electricity from renewable sources has been developing for many years. Hydro, Wind, Biomass and Geothermal Power are economically viable today. Solar, perhaps the energy source with the largest potential of all, is expected to be economically viable within the next few years.
Biofuels have the potential to supplement gasoline as a transport fuel: countries are moving towards mandates of 10% or higher of Biofuels in transport fuels; technology is overcoming the problems associated with using food crops as a fuel and this will lead to levels of Biofuel use that are even higher than this.
We are at the start of an Alternative Energy revolution. We believe that this revolution will continue to gain momentum as technologies advance and as the international community continues to prioritize rising energy costs, the environment, and the issues surrounding traditional energy production.
