Our Approach

At Guinness Atkinson Funds, we believe successful investing starts with a forward-looking worldview. We look for the powerful themes shaping economies and industries, from innovation and energy transition to the growth of Asia and global demographic shifts. With over three decades of experience working together as a team, we pair this global perspective with disciplined, fundamental analysis to uncover companies best positioned to benefit. Our approach is long-term, high-conviction, and designed to capture tomorrow’s opportunities while grounded in the proven principles that have guided us since 1994.

Investment Process

Guinness Atkinson Funds are equal-weighted products that generally hold a set number of 30-35 positions, depending on the fund. This means each of our funds contain only our best ideas.

UNIVERSE CONSTRUCTION

We start by identifying companies that meet our thematic constraints.

IN-DEPTH ANALYSIS

Our investment process is both art and science. We perform a deep-dive quantitative analysis of each potential holding’s financial metrics, with a big emphasis on consistent cash flow and profitability. We also do a qualitative analysis to help us understand companies from both bottom-up and top-down perspectives.

QUALITY

We prefer companies that consistently produce above-average return on capital, and have low debt levels and good balance sheets.

Our Team

Guinness Atkinson was formed in 2002 and began managing the Guinness Atkinson Funds in 2003. The key executives of Guinness Atkinson previously worked together at predecessor companies and the oldest of mutual funds was launched in 1994. Our portfolio management team is located in London, England. Our US headquarters is in Pasadena, California.

Tim Guinness and Jim Atkinson share years of experience in financial management and a keen passion for understanding global transformation.
